NRM feels that at the present time, Mallard will not be overhauled/restored as theres currently 3 other A4s working on the mainline and that all she is just another A4 that just happens to be a record holder so they would rather spend the money overhauling another engine thats unique
also remember it wasnt the NRM that built Tornado it was a group so you cant just say they should have spent the money overhauling another engine like Mallard which isnt even owned by them |

Ah, but I can come back on you there!
There are plans that were being drawn up for Mallard to be overhauled! (Can't remember how long ago but it wasn't that long!) |

Iv got a solution to this argument!
SHUT UP! its just that easy this is a garden railway forum we dont need to argue about full scale steamers we dont own or cannot run in our gardens.
unless they release a 0 gauge Tornado then feel free |

It's true that when I did work experience there last year there were mutterings amongst the staff that the museum was "thinking about it for 2018". However, apparently the boiler needs a lot of expensive work.
Another factor is that 2018 is apparently the earliest the museum would consider releasing Duchess of Hamilton for a return to steam, something I am sure everyone would be eager to see! Appealing though the prospect of Mallard and Hamilton running together on the main line together would be, since Flying Scotsman should also be running then as well that would leave the NRM with three of their biggest, highest-profile exhibits competing for main line work and potentially spending a lot of time away from the museum. I think they may well feel it doesn't make sense... |

| Id like to see hamilton in steam, though it begs the question why they spent such money, time and trouble (took ages to find the right grades in small orders) streamlining a locomotive that doesnt bloody work! |

| I'm, not to bothered about seeing the Mallard steam, what I would like to see however, is say Sir Nigel Gresley or one of the others returned to full clad (ie: early LNER) condition, in Silver for 5 years and blue for the other 5. |

| and a loco try the record! |

you do know mallards boiller may be life exspired there is only so much you can do with a boiller if the NRM want to keep the original Boiller it will take years of work and maybe millions of pounds altho i did read some were that they had a spare A4 boiller which scotsman was using untill his overhaul....

That was sold to Jeremy Hosking. Perhaps he might be persauded to lend it back, though, on the right terms...
I definately agree that it would be good to see another A4 returned to pre-war condition. Anyone know how the cosmetic restoration of Dominion of Canada (announced in Steam Railway a little while back) is progressing? It would be magnificent to see her restored to her 1937 splendour, complete with valances, silver lettering, single chimney and CPR bell. I think the Canadians would be less likely to overlook her in this condition - far more impressive than the drab Brunswick green she has carried since 1952! But somehow I can't help feeling it won't happen... |

I'm just glad the NRM gave Bodmin the go ahead to restore one of my favourite locos, the last remaining Drummond T9, Southern 120...

Now back to my original comment as most seem to agree, it would have been better to spend all that money and restore some genuine historic engines to service for the general public to see and admire rather than a rehash of an old design that proves nothing except that if you have enough money............................
Of course I am biased, as a profesional restorer of cars I try to use as much of the original car as possable...............
And as for airplane restorations, no don't get me started...................... |

There aren't many that do that though Paul, not even with the cars! Always thought it very odd myself. I'd much rather have a slightly shabby original car than an immaculate machine that has a new shell, new drivetrain etc etc...
But I like Tornado, simply because it was something that was done for no better reason than they wanted to and it makes people feel good, bit like that huge French suspension bridge...
I think now it's been done though, the rest of these new build projects are a bit of a waste of money.
